Humans, not places, make memories.

/Ama Ata Aidoo/

It is finally happening. A moment I have waited for at least 6 years now. 6 years expecting it consciously, but I think it really must have been my whole lifetime .

Letter of resignation has been handed in. Decision made – I am going! Where to? – I don’t know! Everybody around me knows now I will be going travelling, and constantly I am being asked the question where am I going, do I know yet and whether I bought the ticket. My lovely people, I have reached an extra-terra-alpha-beta level (.. it exists okay?) of philosophical cognition where I don’t really care. It doesn’t really matter where I will go. Going matters. It’s not about the destination, it is about the journey.

Saying that I do have a rough idea of where I want to start and what my draught plan is. Not sure if I should reveal that since I might tell you I plan to go to Trinidad and end up in Uganda. That’s what I meant by saying a ‘rough’ idea.

Anyway, to the point. What I think and what most people, who have done a bit of travelling would agree with me on, is that it is not about places but about experiences and people the people. To simplify this even further – it really is about the people. Oh, wait, ‘I thought you are going on your own’ – you will say. Correct. I only GO alone, but I never am alone. And that is the beauty of it.

Travelling is all about the people.

  • The locals you meet on the way who show you a different way of life, make you understand that YOUR problems in THEIR world mean nothing. You are blessed to even have problems!
  • Other travellers you meet on the way. Cause if you share a moment with someone it becomes more real (ye, I know – if it’s real it’s real, but you know what I mean). Memories of moments shared are the only true souvenir. Only if you don’t end up with dementia at old age.
  • Finally it’s about a person, someone you spend every second with – YOURSELF. Even though, people play a big part in the moments, your state of mind does too. Travelling is about getting to know yourself, reaching inner balance and understanding who you really are. Moments solo are the best way of achieving the above. Having to be stuck with yourself, means you have to rely on yourself and you have to trust yourself. Therefore you really need to get to know yourself. Most people don’t trust themselves so how can they expec others to trust them?

If I was born for anything, that would be travelling.
